Coastal Charm: House by The Sea

This classy traditional beach house in Carlsbad, California was an especially fun, collaborative project since my creative client had a vision and was ready for big change. The family of 7 lives less than a half a mile from the ocean, so we incorporated feminine coastal touches into all aspects of the design. From flooring and soft paint colors to custom cabinetry, the space went from dark to light and breezy with a place for everything and live flowers and succulents dotted throughout the home- a special, personal touch.

THE MOST DRAMATIC CHANGE HAPPENED IN THE KITCHEN:

The original design had double ovens and an L-shaped island with a clipped edge. We straightened out the island and made it 9’-0” long to fit the whole foodie family. The double oven was replaced with a commercial range which allowed for a custom storage cabinet reminiscent of old English Larders (a standalone “wardrobe for food”)- one of my favorite upgrades. The kitchen backsplash is white Walker Zanger tile with white grout which adds texture to the clean space. We knew we didn’t want an all-white kitchen so the island was painted a soft blue. Glass pendants added more lighting and visual interest without blocking the view of the custom inset cabinetry.

A BEAUTIFUL FOCAL POINT:

The entire living area was designed to feature a stunning piece of artwork. This art piece by Theresa Losa is the perfect coastal abstract with gorgeous, calming colors just off the entry. We pulled the softer colors into the furniture and decor to compliment the art, with walls panels designed to frame the painting as well. Most people wouldn’t consider a white sofa in their home with teenagers and young adults, but this sofa by Serena and Lily was the perfect solution. Their perennials fabric is so easily cleaned.

CREATING AN OFFICE SPACE:

This room didn’t exist before the remodel. We added a loft so the family could spend time during the week working from home, and an office with an ocean view was an added bonus! What was once three small windows is now one large, focal window that allows the ocean breeze to cool the upstairs. The built-in desks have a middle cabinet for the printer and other office supplies and the cozy window seat adds warmth and functionality with two filing drawers underneath so every inch of space was utilized. We love the contrast of the antique brass hardware on the office cabinetry.
